BOYNE Golf nominated for USA TODAY 10BEST Golf Resort

Trip Planning
BOYNE Golf, one of North America’s largest golf resort destinations, has been recognized by USA Today as No. 1 among the 10BEST Golf Destinations in the U.S. for a golf getaway. In addition, The Highlands was ranked No. 2 in the 10BEST Golf Resort.
Two upgrades at The Highlands, in Harbor Springs, have changed the golf atmosphere there. One is called Doon Brae, a one-of-a-kind nine-hole short course that was planned as the star attraction. The other is the Back Yaird.
Cool air, earth tones, long sleeves and low humidity—it’s hard to beat the weather in the fall. Add to that the peak course conditions common in these months, and it’s no wonder why fall golf is considered by many to be the best.
While you’re dreaming about great golf destinations from Pebble Beach to Pinehurst, why not consider a trip somewhere in the middle—in a land of charming lake towns proffering homemade ice cream and fudge?
Short courses have become a rage, immensely fun counterpoints to more substantive 18-hole layouts that are perfect for between-rounds downtime, twilight outings, larger groups and spirited bet-settling.
When it comes to the resort’s replication efforts, the newest course at the property—built into the side of a ski hill, no less—knocks the ball out of the proverbial park.
On a beautiful early evening in June, I was finessing a pitching wedge downhill into the 9th green on the brand-new par-3 Doon Brae course at The Highlands in Harbor Springs, Mich. Beyond the green and the adjacent freshly renovated lodge, I could see for miles as the sun lowered in the sky. Right then, I thought to myself how this creative layout built into a ski slope truly adds a new dimension to the already full golf experience at mega-popular BOYNE Golf.
Much like stretches of idyllic coastline, the mountains represent an ideal landscape for golf, one that can deliver striking vistas and dramatically routed holes. But venturing into the hills usually comes with a price. Characteristically, mountain golf courses place a heavy premium on accuracy—to the point that marginal shots are often made worse by unfriendly bounces.
Golf content creator Sam Heung Min plays a round with two of the top golfers on YouTube, Luke Kwon and Luke Toomey (Tooms), for a competitive showdown on Links/Quarry at BOYNE Golf’s Bay Harbor Golf Club.
You can fly to Traverse City, Michigan, non-stop from 20 U.S. cities, and you can be at one of the BOYNE Golf resorts after about an hour behind the wheel.
Course Insights
Perched on the cliffs overlooking Little Traverse Bay, Crooked Tree Golf Club was established in 1998 and emerged quickly as a significant addition to the golf scene in northern Michigan.
BOYNE Golf would go on to accumulate ten golf courses in its portfolio, with an 11th in short course Doon Brae, which opened in 2025. But its OG, The Heather, continues to shine as one of its finest golf properties.
The track that shattered my expectations the most was the Arthur Hills course at The Highlands resort, a late 90’s design by, as the name suggests, Arthur Hills. With a routing that cuts through dense forests and wanders up and down towering hills, it occupies a truly remarkable natural setting while providing an exemplary test of golf.
True to its name, The Alpine Course at Boyne Mountain offers a golf experience shaped by dramatic elevation changes, breathtaking vistas and unforgettable holes as it winds gracefully down its Northern Michigan mountainside.
A little known golf fact: Michigan boasts more public golf courses than any other state in America. That fact alone makes picking the 25 best public golf courses in Michigan quite a task. The GolfPass community is here to help.
Our ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses provides a biennial snapshot into the state of affairs of public and resort golf course architecture. It also, increasingly, offers a peek into the wider world of golf development.
